Food Network Horror Cakes Challenge

Well, we had a blast! This episode that aired this evening was filmed last December, and it was really exciting to see it all come together. Yes, our cake was colorful, maybe a touch too whimsical for the judges taste, but how many scary movies are based on unassuming  things? Dolls, clowns, those are all really freaky...why not flesh eating pastry????It could happen. next time you are enjoying your favorite muffin, brownie or cupcake, make sure your careful....very careful.....

  2. I'm so upset you didn't win, I actually shouted at my TV! I'm not usually so adamant about the results of reality tv competitions, but this one was clear to me - your cake was more than adequately scary, and still fun and well made - you were robbed!

  5. Clearly, those judges are not true horror fans. My husband and I will watch just about any horror movie that comes our way. Rabid Grannies, Dr. Giggles, The Ice Cream Man, Killer Clowns from Outer Space...these are all horror films. The idea of cute or good being turned into ugly is a staple of the horror genre. Hubby and I both thought your cake was the best. I have never seen motion on a cake like that...it was perfect. I had to find your blog just to tell you...you were right, the judges were wrong.

  6. I just watched the Horror Cakes Challenge on my DVR and have to say you were ROBBED. That cake was AMAZING and ORIGINAL!!! I kept telling my wife that you should totally try to sell this as a movie idea to the SyFy Channel or something. The little killer cupcakes reminded me a little of the movie, GREMLINS.

The judges had no idea what they were talking about!!

  7. the judges were NOT thinking clearly...your cake was the best far in my opinion. your detail was AMAZING!! and the final product was just unbelievable..you should have won!!!!!

  9. I agree with Renee. I came to your Web site just to let you know that you were right when you said your cake was adequately scary and gross. I grossed me out a lot more than the other cakes and I wish you would have won. Thanks for freaking me out! haha

  10. I agree: You were robbed!!!

I, too, just finished shouting at my TV. ;) It was clear the judges made up their minds who the winner would be in the first 15 minutes - anyone could see they all favored the motorcycle from the very beginning. Sure, that was a great cake, but the fact that Vincent told YOU to look up the word "horror" in the dictionary is simply astounding! Your cake had enough gore and scare-factor to seriously creep me and John out, while the grim reaper looked like the design on the back of a Harley jacket. I've never seen a Food Network Competition judging this far off the mark!

Anyway, I just want you to know how sorry I am that you didn't win, since you really deserved to!

  12. I haven't seen the episode yet, but that cake is absolutely astounding, both technically and in terms of a really creative idea! I don't know what the other ones were, but you win a blue ribbon in my book!

  13. I loved the cupcakes! And the whole concept was great!

  14. Add us to the list of people who thought you were robbed. When the cupcake and donuts started moving we were dying saying oh my gosh that's great they have to pick her. It was awesome. Great job.

  15. Totally lame that you were dinged as being too cute. Your cake was hands down the best one, it told a story, was scary and disgusting. I demand a recount!

  16. I cannot believe you didn't win. I usually agree with these challenges but you were robbed. Great job and so creative. The moving cupcakes was one of the coolest things I've seen on that show. My husband and I actually yelled at the TV during your judging.

  17. Your cake was the best cake I have ever seen on any food show. I was so dissapointed that you didn't win and were not acknowledged even as a runner up. I have never seen such poor judgement. Your cake was skillfully executed and was both beautiful and horrific. If a beautiful pastry or cake was to become evil and come to life, its colors would not change. I'm not sure if I can ever watch that show again because I can never trust the judgement of those judges and I'm glad you knew they were wrong as well. Again, I have never seen a better cake ever! Thanks for being an inspiration to artists and cooks.

  19. Hey--just another supporter who felt you should have won the Challenge. My boyfriend and I loved your cake from start to finish, and were actually insulted when the judges told you to look up the definition of horror. We're both horror fanatics and thought yours was the creepiest idea presented. You guys rocked it out and made an awesome cake. (:

  20. I watched this episode the other day. I was wanting you to win. It's an awesome idea and great the way it came together. I want to eat it to get back at those evil cupcakes :)

  22. Last year, Food Network contacted my sister and I about judging this Challenge - we have a horror movie review website (www.theyrecoming.com) and we make cakes (www.doitmyself.org). I'm perhaps best known for the infamous Thorax Cake. Clearly, the Food Network didn't choose us as the judges, but I just want to let you know that, if we had been judging, we would have fought tooth and nail for you to win. Your cake was fantastic! Shame on Gunnar Hansen for limiting his definition of "horror" to his own slasher milieu. There are plenty of fantastic horror movies that are exactly in the style of your cake - Killer Klowns from Outer Space and The Stuff spring immediately to mind. More than that, your cake was the only one that really told a complete story and the only one that made me really want to see the movie that the cake envisioned. Great job! I hope we'll see you on future Challenges.

  23. You can also add me to the list of people who thought that you should have won the cake challenge. When I saw that your evil baked goods did not win I was raging in my living room and screaming at the tv! I love your evil cupcakes so much I am going to make some like it for my birthday this year. I hope you don't mind!!

  24. I loved your cake and so did my little one. She wants me to make a cake just like this for her 4th birthday :> I totally think your attitude was as perfect as your cake :>

  25. you really were robbed! ....is there any chance of getting more pictures of the cake and other pieces? Like close-ups of the cupcakes they were all so adorably scary! any movie made off this would be like way scarier than attack of the killer tomatos or the blob! innocuous until you find yourself dead. hehehe anyways if you don't want to post more pics here would you email me some!?! please!!! my email is marmalade_wizard@yahoo.com

  26. Tardy here but just saw the episode last night and hoped to find a way to contact you. My husband and I thought in fact your cake was actually the scariest! Beautifully executed and the movement was totally unexpected and perfect. Wish you had won and in our book, you totally deserved to.

  28. this cake was AMAZING! i totally thought you guys should have won...and then when you didnt i was like "the judges have no idea what they are talking about!" :)

  29. Chalk up 2 more incensed viewers who thought that your scary cake was by far the best...just perfect...amazing! The judges I guess had no concept that the best horror revolves around the innocent turned nasty! Evil cupcakes gnawing at the hand were genius...we loved them! :)

Sorry you didn't get the check, but wish you well for the future. Stoopid judges!!
